Covers by John Maus
So John doesn't really seem to do covers (apart from Hey Moon, which was more like a duet). What songs do you think would do well to have a Maus makeover (or simply sound completely different by his interpretation)?
I would love to hear him do The Velvet's Venus in Furs or maybe something from John Cale's Vintage Violence period.

Waiting for the Sun by the Doors
I can imagine enormous echo on the "waiting...waiting" part

Re: Covers by John Maus
john should do a covers album of gospel blues songs in their original form but just overdubbed with his baritone...kind of call and response
maybe a menacing, echoed chuckle here and there...
Maybe a "you see...YOU SEE" over Dark Was the night, cold was the ground and manic stabs of synth throughout
well, that's what I'd like to hear at the moment, haha

If Ariel can make the percussion noises in his armpits, I'm sure John can manage with a drum machine.Jacob wrote:Ariel Pink
Specifically a song from The Doldrums that is keyboard-heavy. Though I don't know how he would program those weird rhythms with a drum machine![]()

I thought cop killer was some song from a computer game, John Maus just made up the lyrics. I can't remember the name of it.

Cop Killer is (sort of) a Body Count cover. When you hear him talk about it, he gives it so much more depth as a protest song that I'm willing to give Body Count a lot more credit than I have in the past.

The Cop Killer part starts at about 1:11 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsBIULHXT-I
Also I don't think there's any connection between it and the Body Count song, aside from them both having the same title. The John Maus song is so vague that you could imagine it to be about anything, including just wanting to kill cops for no reason. I heard him in an interview one time say it was about killing Nazis. The Body Count song is clearly about wanting to kill dirty racist cops.

He references the Body Count song directly in this piece for Quietus: http://thequietus.com/articles/06499-jo ... -interview and again in this Guardian interview: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/no ... -interviewjoe wrote:The Cop Killer part starts at about 1:11 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsBIULHXT-I

"The song's not about killing a human being, but about overcoming inhumanity; destroying the machinery that turns us toward an end other than ourselves."

I actually looked into this a lot, too. Ice T is really articulate, intelligent, and a genuinely cool mutha. Great clip of him on the Arsenio Hall show in '89 addressing the controversy of "Cop Killer":

I can completely understand why this is something that interested John Maus.

Cool, 2 covers for the price of 1! I've always liked video game music. From the official Facebook artist fan page of Peter Hajba in July last year:joe wrote:The Cop Killer part starts at about 1:11 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsBIULHXT-I
"John Maus contacted me a few months ago, and told me he was inspired by my old song "Crystal Dragon". I signed a contract. I got a credit in the album sleeve."
Hard to believe that composition was from '92! I will try to find more golden age Scaven/Future Crew sounds now.

Thanks for that clip, Joe. I really want to hear John cover the original Splatterhouse and Castlevania themes now.
