John Maus at Frieze Art Fair New York

Post by pelleasetmelisande »

Not sure what this is, but apparently, on Sunday May 12, 2013 at 1:00pm John Maus is having a Listening Session / conversation with musician/writer Ross Simonini as a part of New York's Frieze Art Fair, which takes place on Randall's Island in Manhattan from May 10-13th of 2013.

!!!!

Okay, so since I've missed seeing him PLAY a million times, at least maybe I can see him give a TALK!

I need to make up for when you visited last time, so I will try my hardest. I haven't been to NY since 2003!

I sincerely hope you do, App!

I emailed Ross Simonini for some more info and this was his reply:
Hi Jaime,
Thanks for writing. The talk should be about an hour and will include copious examples of music John has selected (both his own and the music that influences him). I'm looking forward to it. See you then.

We'll be arriving the same day! Let me know if you want to do something in the city (there are a few good shows on in that time), but MA and I will certainly see you at the art fair and I will bring your DVDs with me. :dancparty:

I recorded about 40 minutes of video (which I will upload once I get back home: still in New York). I really enjoyed the talk. There was discussion on The Transformers, (glorious) Street Hawk and Flight of the Navigator themes, and also speculation about "despicable" t.v. advertising. John half-joked about composing a theme for a blueberries commercial to pay off his student loans. It was blatantly obvious how uncomfortable the entire event made him- there was more nervous knee-twiddling than in any interview I have ever watched with him. He clearly registered disinterest when some unfortunate people walked out. I got the impression the whole environment sort of alienated him and he was in a big hurry to get the hell out of there. He was literally imploring people to ask questions for the Q & A (I asked two even though my voice was shot with sickness). He seemed distracted (and starving) when I talked to him after the session so I invited him out for a thank-you lunch and then circled the exhibits five times looking for him, but he was long gone. Don't blame him, really, but I'm disappointed I failed to convey how much the talk meant to me.
Ricky and MadamAnt and I got to hang out (I apologize to the former if we were totally obnoxious, but that's what happens when we get together) and it was a great time. I would just be happier if I felt John was anything other than wholly uncomfortable and disillusioned with the experience.
