I kind of agree with him, in a purely practical sense
Lyrics to a song aren't poetry, any more than the script to a play or a movie is literature
The lines we draw between different forms of art are, to a large extent, ultimately arbitrary, but if we're going to start throwing classifications around then I think he's right
If lyrics are great, they're great because of how they work in a song. If they still sound good when treated outside of music, as poetry, that's nice, but that's like a side effect to what they're meant to be doing

I agree with Liam. I think John's use of the word "better" kind of confuses the point though, if that was the point he was trying to make.
