Re: John Maus (A Mathematical Perspective)
Welcome, Ian. It's a pleasure to have someone so articulate join our ranks.
Re: mathematics. Someone quizzed John about this at the Frieze Art Fair recently and he seemed to shrug it off as something he dabbled in at the mercies of a moment of panic when he wondered (as you do being a grad student) how to make a living with a political science degree. He has also said in a Q&A, to feebly paraphrase, that he wished he had done something in natural sciences, mathematics, or computer science because they are taken as a truth of some kind, and ultimately just as creative in practice as the arts and humanities. I can understand from the point of view of reaching a 'truth' that is absolute, undergoing rigorous inductive axioms to be maintained as logical proof. So much of composing music is just conjecture, especially in isolation. It's difficult to know what you are actually hearing when you are so close to your own work. He has said of covers, too, that sometimes that's when he finally 'gets' it, when he hears someone else's interpretation of another song. I guess I can appreciate this from another creative perspective (visual arts, etc.). You never know what you're doing when you're in it, really.

I have apparently let evolutionary biology down because I am no good at fighting.
