'Do Your Best'(song) sped and/or pitched up

Post by fieldmaus »

Doesn't it seem like John recorded 'Do Your Best' at a faster speed and a higher pitch, and then slowed it down to form the final version that we all know and love? I'm not sure of how to speed it up without warping the sound, has anyone ever tried this?

The slow attack and decay on the drum sound also suggests a slowed-down recording. It's a wonderful sound, so lonely and sad. It's probably my favorite song of his.

I would have to say that presently, It's one of my least favorite Maus songs, but probably because I listened to it too much when I first got introduced to his music, back in '08. It was the most accessible song to me at the time, and I listened to it NON STOP! I loved it!, and I still love the lyrics, but musically it seems like an exception to the rest of his work, and more specifically 'Love Is Real,' as an album.

I'd noticed also that some people only listen to 'Do Your Best,' (and say that it sounds like U2. Gross!!!) but they don't really like any of his other music :mixedemotions: , so I had kind of put the song away for a while, till I listened to it again the other day, and that's what got me wondering what the original version sounded like.

"Do Your Best" will always be one of my most beloved Maus songs: It's that deep, murky bass line; the ethereal chiming keys and his plaintively earnest baritone call for togetherness. There's something spell-binding about it. It was the first John Maus song I ever heard and it still sends shivers down my spine.

And it sounds nothing like U2. Eew.

It's got kind of a dark, creepy sound to me. Love it. I can see why people might like that song and nothing else. I'm not sure what other Maus song I would compare it to. It's a unique one amongst his discography.
