his PhD dissertation

Post by epiphamus »

does anyone know what John wrote his PhD dissertation on? I believe he was working within the realm of political philosophy, and through watching and reading the various interviews he's done I have gathered some of the writers he is influenced by and references, however I'm rather curious to know what he himself has been writing about (all this time).. and perhaps even what sort of topics he teaches?

any ideas?

Well this thread really shone bright lights in the night.

I came across this: globalcenterforadvancedstudies.blogspot.com.au/2013/09/prof-john-maus.html - while stalking fragments of his mental output. I wonder if he is teaching or working there currently.. hmm
Anyway, I noticed Badiou, Franco Berardi and Zizek on the enormous list of staff for this organisation, so he seems to be in good company..

Personally I just want more of John Maus the author to complement John Maus the musician.. impatient.. :arms:

Probably more or less the same:

https://globalcenterforadvancedstudies.org/faculty/

Simply click on his name, its arranged alphabetically on surname..

Actually I would read any of his academic writings as well, so if someone has something besides Listening Music and Two Event, I'd be excited to give it a go

In case my friends here missed it, you can now read John's full dissertation paper online:

http://fuckyeahjohnmaus.tumblr.com/post ... nd-control

Thought it was somehow appropriate in this case to link an academic paper from a tumblr source.

Thank you so much for posting this. I was able to find it and download it. I've been looking for this for some time, ever since I read that weirdly scathing review of John's album in Slant magazine.

As I said elsewhere, I am elbow deep. So far, as a direct result, I have independently researched the gruesome drawing and quartering of Robert-François Damiens and the ‘nervous illness’ of Daniel Paul Schreber; I've looked up the blueprints to Jeremy Bentham’s all-seeing Panopticon prison; and I've listened to an hour of a man re-recording his voice on multi-generations of magnetic tape until he is overcome by the positive feedback of the acoustics in the room. I've moved on to the Math, Chemistry and Music section and enjoying plunging back down that academic rabbit hole. I was up after 4am with it the other night, but I have no regrets. I'm not from the philosophy school, so admittedly it is taking me three times as long as your average theorist to analyse the Foucauldian scholarship there, but I AM GETTING IT. At least I had a head start with Paul Celan's Atemwende.
However, I am a self-confessed math moron and a grasp of Lacan psychoanalysis does not come naturally to me. I looked up 'the Real' as it refers to the authentic truth of being and Google helpfully suggested 'the real slim shady.'
As I was struggling, I came across this one minute video which applied Lacanian theory to David Lynch's Mullholland Drive in a way even I could understand! So, if anyone else here is as stupid as I am, then check this out (but beware the thing behind Winky's Diner as exemplifying the Real- that scene still scares the shit out of me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwlirZQLAAg
Looking forward to hearing everybody else's thoughts on this. I'm sure you'll all have much more insight than me!
